COSAFA U20 Diary: COSAFA Empowers 32 Local Coaches

The ground for the Cosafa Under-20 championship has been laid with training for 32 local coaches conducted in Lusaka at the National Sports Development Centre (NASDEC).
Cosafa Technical Advisor Zunaid Mall is conducting a FAZ D licence course in conjunction with the Football Association of Zambia.
The course is part of the legacy of the Cosafa championship in any country that it is hosted.

In an interview, Mall said Cosafa always focused on empowering the communities that they hold tournaments in.
“One of Cosafa’s visions is part of the coaching programs and the tournaments. All the tournaments that cosafa stages, we have a course for to empower local coaches from the region and the area we are coming from. Part of the other programs are the administration and referees courses,” he said.
Mall said Zambia had been a great host for the Cosafa u20 in the last two editions. “The under-20 has always been a very good tournament, the past few years that it was hosted in Kitwe, we looked and saw that the standards were always very high, the teams that came were well prepared,” he said.
Mall said the Cosafa tournament was a good breeding ground for future champions.
“If you look at the region, in terms of growth, there is no smaller and bigger countries, things are starting to get a bit tighter. We are expecting a good quality tournament,” he said.
“There is no favourite in football, anything can happen in football I think if people are well prepared and the teams which are tactically well organized those are the ones that we see hopefully in the later stages of the tournament.”
He also paid tribute to the Zambian fans that he praised for supporting different teams.
“Youth football is always exciting, lots of goals, I have been to Zambia on many occasions and one important thing is the fans. They really appreciate good football as much as they are partisan towards the Zambian team, I think they support good football.”
The 32 apprentice coaches will undergo the training over four days in Lusaka.
Among the attendees is 2007 CAF Young Player of the Year Clifford Mulenga.
Zambia will host the Cosafa Under-20 from December 4-14 in Lusaka.
