As of today Zambia has currently slipped from the 7th to 9th place on the CAF 5 year Rankings.
The CAF 5 Year Rankings act as rankings to decide which leagues in Africa can have four teams.
Every club that reaches the group stage earns points for its league and and currently the top 12 leagues are allowed to feature four clubs in Caf Competition.
Zambia’s position however is under threat with Angola ( 10th place), Sudan ( 11th place) and Tanzania ( 12th Place) only a few points behind and within touching distance of moving past Zambia.
What makes Zambia’s situation difficult is that aside from Guinea its only Zambia in the TOP 12 that has remained with only two teams in the competition.
Angola, Sudan and Tanzania who are below Zambia all have three teams left in the competition meaning if they get even two teams in the group stage they will all automatically overtake Zambia which will leave Zambia in the last 12th slot.
Given that most likely that Zambia will move down the rankings then the focus will be on the leagues just outside of the Top 12 and looking to get in and these are Cameroun, Senegal, Libya and Ivory Coast.
Cameroun are in 13th place but they only have one team remaining in the competition in Cotonsport but they reached the Caf Confederations Cup Semi Finals last season and chances are high that they will reach the group stage.
Libya are the biggest threat because out of the closest leagues outside the TOP 12 they still have both teams in the competition with both advancing to the next round and Libyan sides usually tend to make the group stage of CAF Competition.
If Zanaco and Red Arrows fail then we will have to hope that none of the clubs from Cameroun, Senegal, Libya make it to the group stage.
